Your best future customers already know you. They championed your product at their last company, sat through the renewal meetings, and defended the line item in budget reviews. Then they changed jobs — and most sales teams never noticed.
Champion tracking (also called job change tracking) is the practice of monitoring when the contacts in your CRM move to new companies, so you can reach out at the exact moment they land somewhere new. It is one of the highest-converting plays in B2B sales, and one of the least practiced.
Why job changes are the warmest trigger in B2B
The math is hard to argue with:
- 65% of a company’s business comes from existing customers and their networks.
- You have a 60–70% chance of selling to an existing relationship, versus 5–20% for a cold prospect.
- Champion-sourced deals close with a 2.7x higher probability — and in roughly half the sales cycle.
When a champion joins a new company, they inherit new problems, new budget, and a mandate to show results fast. Recommending a tool they already trust is the easiest win on their 90-day plan. You just have to be there when it happens.
The problem: 94% of them never tell you
Only around 6% of customer contacts proactively let a vendor know they’ve switched jobs. The other 94% simply move on — even the ones who loved your product. Their inbox changes, their old email bounces, and the relationship your team spent years building quietly evaporates.
Manually checking LinkedIn for hundreds or thousands of contacts doesn’t scale. A rep with 2,000 contacts would need to review dozens of profiles every single day just to stay current.
How champion tracking works
Modern champion tracking tools like Champions automate the whole loop:
- Connect your CRM. Champions bolts onto Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive and others — no new logins, no app for reps to learn.
- Continuous monitoring. Every contact is watched for job changes and even intent-to-move signals, on a weekly or monthly cadence.
- Alerts where reps work. When a champion lands somewhere new, the record updates in your CRM and the right rep gets notified — with the fresh company, role, and LinkedIn profile attached.
With a typical database of 10,000 contacts, expect roughly 20% to surface as hot leads immediately, then another 2–3% every month as people keep moving.
Champion tracking is also churn defense
Every job change cuts two ways. When a champion leaves one of your key accounts, that account just became a churn risk — the person who renewed you is gone. Tracking departures gives customer success an early warning to re-engage the account, while sales follows the champion into their new company. One signal, two revenue motions. More on this in our benefits overview.
How to get started
Start with your closed-won contacts from the last three years — the people who actually used and championed your product. Layer in intent signals, route alerts to the reps who owned those relationships, and measure champion-sourced pipeline as its own category. Most teams see their first meetings within weeks, because these are emails people actually answer.
